Facility Excellence

Legacy: A Campaign for Millsaps College

Commitment to Facility Excellence: $18,000,000

Planned facility enhancements will preserve the distinct elements that the Millsaps family and friends treasure and that make the campus unique, yet will provide the level of function that our outstanding academic, student life, and athletic programs demand.

Chapel/Recital Hall ($7,000,000)
As a church-related college, Millsaps plays a distinct role in educating students for life in the 21st century. The College is deeply committed to cultivating not only academic excellence, but also moral conduct, responsibility, and imagination. The existing religious life facilities limit our ability to create effective programming to attain that vision. A facility is needed to provide students with an improved environment for worship, reflection, fellowship and sharing, and classroom programs. This new, state-of-the-art facility would also include space for a recital hall for the Millsaps performing arts programs.

Campus Appearance ($2,000,000)
Improved landscaping, walkways, and lighting campus-wide; consistent, user-friendly signage; and entrance gateways that are both welcoming and secure will create an environment that complements the high standards of Millsaps' academic and student life programs.

Athletic Facilities ($2,000,000)
Athletic facility enhancements include building a grandstand and press box at the baseball field, upgrading the tennis and softball facilities, upgrading the football stadium and field house, and building a fitness trail and a concession/restroom facility on north campus.

Residence Hall Renovation and Construction ($5,000,000)
Millsaps residence halls must be safe, comfortable, functional, and welcoming for the current and future generations of students who will call them home. Funds will be used to renovate selected residence halls and assist in constructing new ones, creating an appealing on-campus lifestyle that will help in recruiting, enhance student life, and form the backdrop for fond future memories.

Science Laboratories and Equipment ($2,000,000)
To maintain our demonstrated strengths in the sciences, Millsaps must continually bring laboratories and equipment up to current standards. The Campaign will ensure that the College keeps pace with the evolving needs of the demanding science curriculum.

A Legacy to Build On
On January 28, 1914, a disastrous fire destroyed Old Main, Millsaps' oldest building. Old Main had served as the campus focal point since 1892, when it was built through the combined efforts of the people of Jackson, the Methodists of Mississippi, and the many members of the Millsaps family.

According to the Purple & White, the student newspaper, "It was a building dear to every Millsaps man. Many alumni were saddened by the news of the fire, and many a student watching the conflagration felt almost that a friend was passing away. But no demoralization was caused by this loss, and now everything is in due order. The one question is not 'How did it happen?' but 'What will the new building be?' All will rally soon - hurrah for a greater Millsaps!"

The "new building" the article anticipated was Murrah Hall, which stands on the site of Old Main. Today, the Campaign includes plans for new construction and enhanced facilities campus-wide. Once again, the attitude is "hurrah for a greater Millsaps."
